Telecommunications is basically the transmission of data over substantial distances for the purpose of communication. Telecommunications once consisted of visual signals or audio messages. Visual signals would often come in the form of smoke signals, signal flags, semaphore telegraphs, and optical heliographs. Audio messages on the other hand would come in the form of lung-blown horns, loud whistles, or coded drumbeats. There has not been business continuity in terms of the methods employed for the purpose of telecommunication, as nowaday we instead rely upon electricity and electronics such as teleprinters, telegraphs, and telephones, as well as fiber optics.

It is to the first decade of the twentieth century that we must turn to find the revolution in wireless telecommunications. This is the problem – a regular light bulb spends more than 80 percent of its power on heat while only that small remainder goes on light.
